Last Sunday (August 31st) the Seattle Times ran an AP article about Remodeling Projects that Pay. The article tries to let home owners know (very applicable in today’s market) what changes they can hope/expect to make at different budget ranges, $1,000-$20,000.
The article itself is full of sound information. And we appreciate the Seattle Times for trying to match photographs to the article to better illustrate options to the reader. We are also grateful to the Seattle Times for using a photo of one of our homes (no acknowledgement was actually made) However…
This is the bathroom the showed for a master bath remodel. Different photograph, but same bathroom. It was taken back in September ‘07 when the Times did an article on Susan.
They used this master bath as an example of what you can get for $20,000.
Again, I don’t want to disrespect the Seattle Times, but they need to get a fact checker to take a look at the photos, not just the text, before publishing.
I love this master bath. If I could have it for $20,000 I would start the project immediately. But the reality is that this bath is 305 square feet, without the closets. Not many homes have that sort of square footage allocated for the master bath. So really, you’re looking at an addition (or converting a bedroom) to get a bathroom like this. And, I can all but guarantee the plumbing is in the wrong places and will require extensive manipulation. Then there’s the lighting, the radiant floor heating, the HVAC…
So in the end, for a bathroom like this, if you’re willing to give up the square footage in your existing home (no addition necessary), you’re probably looking at spending in the neighborhood of $50,000.
Seattle Times, thank you for giving your readers some good information on remodeling. To our Lakeville Homes blog readers, you just got some better information to go with that good information.
